Golden Milk (Turmeric Latte) Benefits + Recipe

April 7, 2018

So its World Health Day today (Yippeee) and I wanted to share with you one of my new favourite healthy, must have, must make, and must drink drinks! Golden Milk aka Turmeric Tea... Yes Turmeric, the type you use to make a really good curry. In fact when I make a cup for my husband his response is "Oh its, curry milk!" but we won't get into that.

I want to share with you the benefits of this magical Ayurvedic drink that I now make it a priority to drink at least 4 times a week. I am quite big on skin and avid believer of what you put in is what you get out, I don't pile on products on my face or skin, (I literally moisturise with raw organic shea butter) as I try my very best to keep my diet clean and when I heard that one of the health benefits of Golden Milk is that it clarifies your skin, I was game.

So what are these incredible benefits? Here are some that I found most intriguing:

Clarifies Skin

If you type in Turmeric face masks on the internet you will find thousands of beauty experts, bloggers and youtuber's praising this spice, so just imagine consuming all its great properties? It helps with premature ageing, removes facial lines and reduces the appearance of even the most stubborn acne for clearer and brighter skin.

Purifies Blood

If you didn't know, well now you know! Turmeric has always been an excellent detoxifying agent. If you live in the city you know what it's like, our bodies are subjected to high levels of air pollution daily! Not only that, the toxins we consume from our food and drink can over time damage cells, vessels and tissues our blood needs to reach. Toxins in the blood are often the underlying issue with skin problems and other diseases. Turmeric works with the liver to identify these toxins and purifies through urine.

Liver Tonic

The liver is basically a sponge that absorbs almost all the chemicals that enter the body and can take a battering if proper care isn't taken. Things like air pollution, processed foods such as additives and preservatives, drugs and various diseases cause grave problems for the liver. The Curcumin found in Turmeric has been proven by scientist to help prevent a fatty liver and liver cirrhosis. They detoxifying properties in Turmeric help to reduce the impact of these harsh chemicals against the liver.

Builds Immune System

Protects you from a range of diseases, especially during cold and flu season (which seems to be all year round in the UK), if you're like me and prone to catching colds or annoying bugs, a cup a day will actually keep the doctor away!

Anti-Cancer Properties

In all honesty, I really wish I knew about Golden Milk before my auntie passed away. (I share her story in my FREE Recipe E-Book dedicated to her, here). The curcumin, a chemical produced by Turmeric has been proven to stop the growth and kill cancer cells such as breast cancer, colon, skin and lung cancer. Unfortunately, a lot of cancerous growths go undetected, therefore untreated before they grow, spread and become uncontrollable, so drinking Golden Milk daily could actually prevent malignant growth and stop cancerous cells from developing further in the body.

Helps with Digestive Problems

Everyday common digestive problems can be solved with Turmeric, it has properties that help prevent gas, bloating and even heartburn, it increases bile flow which aids in fat digestion.

Cooking Time: 5-10 mins

Serves: 2

Ingredients:

2 cups of almond or coconut milk
2 tsp turmeric powder
1 cinnamon stick
a pinch of sea salt
6 cardamom pods
a pinch of black pepper
2 tsp ginger powder
2 tsp honey or agave nectar

1 tsp of vanilla essence

1/2 tsp cloves

Method:

Pour milk into a saucepan/pot and heat up, add all the spices and boil over a medium heat for 5-10 minutes. Pour Golden Milk through a tea sieve into two mugs to strain out the pods, cloves and any spices that didn't dissolve in the milk and serve.
