My go to Iron Super Smoothie

January 14, 2019

Whenever I start feeling fatigue and low in energy, my health care provider usually confirms it with a low iron results from my blood tests. Because diabetes runs in my immediate family, I fortunately or unfortunately (depending on how you look at it and if you can stand needles) have to take a blood test at each antenatal appointment.

Recently my irons have been down which is not great for the baby and can cause low birth weight when baby is born and worst preterm labour and delivery. So I am back on my iron supplements but wanted to share with you a quick iron super boosting smoothie recipe I make thats delicious and great for the whole family any time of the day!

In this smoothie I added the following:

Mango: Rich in vitamin C which helps absorb iron in to your blood stream, rich in antioxidants, also high in vitamin A and B6 which is great for baby's immune system, vital organs, brain and nervous system.

Apple: Naturally rich in iron, again packed with vitamin C and its natural sugars give you a boost of energy.

Orange: Popular for its high levels of vitamin C, natural in folate (not folic the man made kind) which helps aid baby's brain development and finally is high in potassium which helps control high blood pressure also known as preeclampsia during pregnancy.

Spinach: Another super veg high in folate acid that helps with the proper growth and development of your baby, high in iron, aids in lowering blood pressure and a source of calcium keeping your bones strong to carry all that baby weight in your 3rd trimester.

Spirulina Powder: High in iron and protein and a source of essential fatty acids, great source of antioxidants and helps to lower blood pressure during pregnancy

Hemp Protein Powder: a natural source of high protein which is key for baby's development.

Please by all means do further research and consult with your practitioner first before trying anything new when pregnant.
